The USSR’s, and then Russia’s, largest atomic-power machine-engineering enterprise was constructed to produce equipment for atomic power stations. Atommash was the signature project of Project Development Institute No. 1 during its design and construction. Hundreds of drawings were sent to Volgodonsk by plane. Atommash was a unique project both in terms of area (more than 600 hectares) and equipment set. The buildings have no comparables in world construction practice in terms of dimensions and loads on columns and foundations. The Institute developed unique adjustable “floating” foundations for these large-dimension extremely-precise machine tools and units. In the design process, Institute specialists were the first ever to solve many highly-complicated engineering tasks.
